Pingyao ancient city is a world heritage listed site and is known for it’s very well preserved city wall and old town. There are 3 main pedestrian streets, which during the course of the day fill up with stalls, people and motorbikes.

Our accommodation was in an old Qing-era compound that had been converted to a hotel. The room was tiny, right on the main street and noisy, and the beds were terrible. I didn’t think you could get any worse than a concrete slab. The owners English was almost non existent so there was a lot of Google translate involved.

The old town was beautiful though, and we spent the day wandering about and exploring. We found a really nice cafe for coffee and a waffle, and then we walked along the city wall. We left early the next morning for Beijing on the train.
