Dresden

After Sanssouci park we hit the autobahn and head to Dresden. When you think of speed limits in Australia they just do not compare to the Autobahn in Germany. The general speed limit of most highways is 130Km/h but a lot of sections have no speed limit and a lot of people like to take advantage and drive fast! I was quite brave but 130Km/h is already quite fast so I mostly stuck to that speed, and people still speed past like you are standing still. If you needed to overtake it was best you did it very quickly otherwise someone would end up on your tail flashing their lights at you! We arrive in Dresden late in the afternoon as the sun is setting with a beautiful pink skyline, I am already thinking of the photo opportunities in my head.

Our hotel is the Holiday Inn and it turns out to be not so good. The rooms are small, it has a tiny double bed that you can feel the springs through and also hard pillows. The girls have a sofa bed but it is also smaller than normal. The girls also at this point have high expectations if breakfast is included and we have had some really outstanding ones at Novotel in Moscow and Saint Petersburg and Scandic across Norway, but this time they would be disappointed. The included breakfast was was not really up to par. There were croissants, which Ella was happy about but not much else, just some toast and jam, and no fresh fruit or anything warm like bacon and eggs.

The redeeming feature however is Dresden itself, this city is fantastic and we liked it more than Berlin. The first night we had a walk through the old town, they were starting to pack up their main Christmas Markets which was a shame as they have the world’s largest Christmas Pyramid setup as the centrepiece. We saw it that night as it was still setup, but by the next morning it was gone. Luckily I got this picture of it on my phone! It kind of shows the scale of the thing as the wooden people are close to life size.

We however discovered another smaller one a bit further into the city which was good as it is quite unique, something we had not seen any where else on our travels. Each level has hand made wooden people and at the top is a propellor which spins. We then had a look at Frauenkirche Dresden and Bruhl’s Terrace beside the river. For some reason we didn’t go inside the Frauenkirche, but from the pictures it looks stunning inside.

After another German bratwurst sausage we jumped on the tram and headed across the river to another part of town for some street art and a building with some very strange drainpipes that apparently sing when it rains. We didn’t get to experience this but was still something a little different.

After that we headed home for some rest, whilst I waited for the light to fade a little for some sunset photos. When I eventually headed out I was a little late as the light was starting to go already, I was too busy looking around and ended up waiting for the tram on the wrong side of the road! I got off the tram and then I ended up running to the bridge as the pink sky was almost fading. I had waited all afternoon for sunset then almost missed it.

This was about it for Dresden, we only had 2 nights here, probably not quite enough, but what we did see was amazing. It is a very beautiful city with an amazing skyline especially when the sky has some colour in it. The next morning we headed off in the car to Prague for New Year’s Eve.
