We arrive into Prague on New Years Eve, and our accomodation here is an AirBNB to the north in Praha 7 looking back over the city. We had trouble finding it so I left Amy in the car and went looking on foot. Next thing you know here she is driving down the street hanging out the window of the car calling out my name. We had to go back, the man from the apartment had just come and knocked on her car window and given her a fright. But the main thing is we had found it and the apartment is nice with a view across the city.

As that night was New Years Eve the celebrations across the city started early. There are no formal fireworks for New Years Eve, they have official fireworks to celebrate the new year on the 1st of Jan. What this means is it is a bit of a free for all in terms of fireworks. From about 4pm onwards it was non stop fireworks, until well after midnight. After midnight it slowed but did not completely stop until after that. The girls thought it was the best having a non stop fireworks show until bedtime. We tried to get some sleep but kept waking up so we saw the new year in on our little balcony in Prague watching endless amateur fireworks. It was crazy I have not seen anything like it, you didn’t know where to look, it was right across the city, some even in the street right below us. It was just something the camera couldn’t really capture that well as a lot of them were off in the distance, but it was pretty spectacular.

The next day we went into the city and walked across the Charles bridge and had a look at Prague Castle sitting up on the hill. The views out over the city were amazing, and of course they had some sausages on bread. This must be a European thing and not just a German thing. The girls don’t mind, I don’t think they care what their sausage is called! After this we walked back through town to watch the astronomical clock tick over the hour and I think about 5000 other people all had the same idea as us. It was packed and from what we saw it is nothing special.

That night there were the official fireworks but we had seen so many the night before we didn’t really bother going out to actually see them. Prague was beautiful, however way overcrowded even in the middle of winter. I can’t even image how busy it would be in summer. The next day we head to a very special place called Cesky Krumlov.

How fabulous are your photos! and your commentary. Such clarity. Just as well you’re not a traveller in NSW or Vic with limited visibility and only occasional blue skies these past few months. At least the smoke, dust and combo are keeping temperatures lower so the little moisture in the ground is being somewhat conserved. Watering is keeping us fit or crippled with hosing outlawed. Have to use watering cans or buckets but there are ways and means to use covert techniques.

    Thanks for such enjoyable travelogues.
